A SPUR of the moment decision to work at a summer camp in the United States gave a Cooks Hill teenager the opportunity of a lifetime.

Charlotte Lang worked at the children's camp for eight weeks and spent another month sightseeing.

She had hoped to gain valuable child-care experience but had not expected to build such close friendships and great memories.

Miss Lang, 19, is studying to be a primary school teacher.

"I took a year off my university studies, as I felt I needed a break," she said.

"I decided to go to camp, because it would give me the opportunity to visit another country and it was associated with my line of study."

Miss Lang was placed at Camp Louise by International Exchange Programs, a non-profit organisation.

"I was able to help children have an enjoyable summer, hang out with the other counsellors and go on memorable adventures," she said.

She was based at Cascade, in the state of Maryland, near the US capital Washington DC.

"I had the chance to meet people from all over the world, including England and Scotland," she said.

Miss Lang decided to go to a meeting about the camps after her mother saw it advertised.

She said she would encourage any Newcastle residents interested in finding out about the summer camps to phone 9299 0444 or visit the website www.iep.org.au.
