The fight against fat is to spread from the schoolyard to the neighbourhood under a plan to spur physical activity in the community. With more than 150,000 children already taking part in subsidised after-school activity programs - which have been extended for three years - the Federal Government has decided to extend help to adults.

The super-fit Health Minister, Tony Abbott, says more than half of Australian adults do not perform enough physical exertion to maintain optimum body weight.

To counter that the Government is to make $11.7 million available for grants to community organisations to fund such activities as healthy walking groups or exercise equipment.
